Jumpstart advances equitable learning outcomes for young children in underserved communities by recruiting and supporting caring adults to  deliver high-quality programming to children and drive systems change through teaching, advocacy, and leadership

WHAT IS JUMPSTART?

Jumpstart is a national early education organization that strives for early literacy and language development in preschool children. We partner with college students who provide language, literacy and social-emotional programming to preschool children. College students have the option to work in a team setting with their peers and classroom teachers. Students also have opportunities to serve individually through classroom service time with preschool teachers.

History of Jumpstart at Pace University

Jumpstart began at Pace in 2007 and since has worked with over 1,000 children at seven different school inspiring children to learn, adults to teach, families to get involved, and communities to progress together.

Pace Jumpstart is conducted throughout the academic year at preschool sites concentrated throughout the Manhattan’s Lower East Side.

Benefits of Jumpstart to Pace University Include:

  • AmeriCorps Education Awards and/or scholarships for student service (approximately $1,300 per participant)

WHO WE SERVE

The Jumpstart program is focused on working with preschool children who live in under-resourced communities. Jumpstart at Pace partners with HeadStart preschools in Manhattan’s Lower East Side that meet the following requirements to become a Jumpstart program partner:

  • The school serves children 3-5 years old (36-59 months)
  • At least 75% of the children served by Jumpstart are identified as low-income students.

HOW WE SERVE

College Students who are eligible for federal work-study awards comprise the Pace Jumpstart Corps. Students work weekly in a team setting which consists of one Team Leader and three to four Corps Members. Jumpstart teams implement two-hour Jumpstart program sessions twice a week throughout the will works in a team setting which consists of 1 Team Leader and 3-4 members. Jumpstart teams will implement the Jumpstart session twice a week throughout the school year. Corps Members also have the opportunity to earn an additional two-to-five hours weekly through individual classroom service.

BENEFITS OFFERED

  • Jumpstart’s partnership with AmeriCorps enables Pace Corps Members to become AmeriCorps Members and join this national service network.
  • As AmeriCorps members, students are eligible to receive a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of their 300-hour annual service term.
  • Jumpstart provides extensive training in the field of early childhood education.
  • Jumpstart offers invaluable opportunity to positively impact the lives of young children.

  • Participating children who begin the year with less well-developed language, adaptive, and social skills make statistically significant improvements through Jumpstart
  • Participating college students serve more than 12,000 hours in their community at each Jumpstart university site with 94% of participating college students crediting Jumpstart with building their leadership skills
  • 93% of participating college students say that Jumpstart makes them feel more connected to their community

Key Facts

  • Less than half of children born into low-income families [48%] are ready for kindergarten at age 5, compared to 75% of children from moderate or high income families.
  • By age four, the average child in a professional family hears about 20 million more words than the average child in a working-class family, and about 35 million more words than children in low-income families.
  • Every dollar invested in early childhood education produces a return on investment of 10%.
